For 10 exciting days during this Western festival—the largest such event in eastern North America—the small town of St-Tite looks like the set of a cowboy movie.
Every September, St-Tite experiences a population explosion, when the nearly 4 000 residents welcome some 600 000 visitors, from die-hard cowboys to those who simply want to see what all the fuss is about. If John Wayne were alive, he would surely feel right at home! Part of the event’s charm is watching the eclectic group of festival-goers strolling along the pedestrian walkway, which is lined with booths selling country-style threads and other trinkets. There is no doubt that the rodeos are the star attraction, however, with a jubilant crowd eager to cheer on the hundreds of lasso pros from Canada, the United States, France, Australia, Mexico and more. And either under the big top or at the Country Club, cowboys stomp their boots to country songs.
