A four-season destination, Shawinigan is a beautiful urban space nestled in a natural environment.
With accommodations of every type, including hotels, cottages, lodges and ready-to-camp tents, Shawinigan is an excellent base camp where both city services and wide-open spaces are within visitors’ reach. Less than 15 minutes away from the restaurants and shops of the downtown area, you can set up your tent in Parc de l’île Melville, hike in La Mauricie National Park of Canada (kayaking and canoe-camping can also be enjoyed a quick quarter of an hour’s drive away) or rent a watercraft and spend the whole day exploring the Saint-Maurice River, which flows through the city. You could even coordinate your travel dates with one of the major sporting events in the area, such as the Classique internationale de canots de la Mauricie, a canoeing competition on the Saint-Maurice River (early September) or the Défis du parc national de la Mauricie, the largest cycling competition in Canada (late September).
